KAY WAS IN the office when the call came through to fly her balloon at five thousand feet. She was out on the dark grass in a trice, yelling to the guards to get the girls up. The guards were good girls tonight, they would do their best – but Sergeant Smith was having a night off, which might well mean trouble from the likes of Bliss. If Jonty had been there, Kay would have been in bed, as most of the girls were, because Jonty would have told her to get some sleep, but because he was away she had felt the weight of responsibility heavy upon her and had elected to cat-nap in the office rather than go to her own bed.
‘You take it too seriously,’ Jonty would say with his disarming grin. ‘But you’ll learn, especially once you get your sergeant’s stripes up. You can’t be all things to all men in this game, Kay me love, you’ve got to learn that. Sleep while you can, eat when you can, relax if you can . . . and leave the rest to the Air Force.’
Easier said than done, though. Acting Sergeant was better, Kay supposed doubtfully, than actually being Sergeant, but she truly felt happier as a corporal with dear Jonty to lean on in times of trouble. Except when he wasn’t there, of course, like now.
So Kay, in her serge trousers and shirt because it was too darned hot for her battledress top, came out of the hut and ran across to the site where the blimp lay, snugged down for the night. The first guard, big Deirdre, was still rousing the girls but the other one, Kath, was already clambering up onto the winch. Kay arrived and glanced uneasily around. One girl came running, heaving dungarees on over what looked suspiciously like a white cotton nightie. You couldn’t blame the girl for taking a chance and getting into something cool, there hadn’t been a raid for weeks and sleeping in your clothes on a night like this would have been hellishly hot.
‘Where’s everyone, Freda?’ Kay asked as the girl panted to a halt beside her. ‘There’s only three of us . . . oh come on, we’d better start. I’ll start the run-down. Switch on winch!’
‘Some of ’em are comin’,’ Freda said uneasily. She ran over to the port guy. ‘Shall I take this one? It’s usually first.’
Another girl came lumbering over; it was Deirdre. She gave Kay an uncertain grin, Kay could see the flash of her big white teeth even in the dark. ‘I dunno whether they’re coming, Corp, but I yelled ’em, honest. It’s bleedin’ Bliss . . . Some of ’em are more scared of her than they are of . . . of . . .’
Her voice trailed away; Kay ground her teeth. So they were more scared of Bliss than they were of Kay Markham, were they? Well she would soon change all that . . . only now
